Building Boom
Well, it’s going to be a very busy year ahead for all concerned at the Swakopmund Municipality.
There has been a dramatic upswing in the construction development industry. So far this year buildings to the value of N$ 23 600 500.00 have been completed and building plans for February alone to the value of N$ 42 868 000.00 have been submitted to the Municipality.
The figures for the year 2023 are as follows; – Building plans submitted 782, to the value of N$ 831 751 081.00. Buildings completed 867, to the value of N$ 447 931 722.00.
With a building boom predicted there should be greater employment opportunities, however the situation will encourage many to flock to Swakopmund putting greater strain on the provision of services and housing delivery.
The Swakopmund Municipality does listen
There have been many complaints about potholes in our roads and illegal dumping of rubbish and builders’ rubble on open land. The Municipality is responding with many of our streets being repaired. A bad section of the beach walkway has also been repaired.
However, the residents can always assist by forwarding a photograph with a clear location of the problem to the SRA and we will endeavour to pass this on to the Municipality and follow up on these issues. Complaints received about high-speed traffic along Ludwig Koch Street has immediately been actioned by our Municipality with the construction of two speed bumps which will hopefully slow down fast driving.
Another complaint is the lack of respect by some dog owners that refuse to pick up their doggie poo when walking along the beachfront. We do appeal to dog walkers to always take along a plastic bag or two to clean up after your beloved pooch.
Maintenance of Swakopmund’s Historic Government Buildings
The SRA will continue to monitor the progress of maintenance work on Government Buildings. After several meetings and reports submitted, initiated by the SRA, assurance was given by the Governor that the matter would receive the appropriate attention. It has been pointed out however that the Governments procurement process is extremely slow and cumbersome, and it will take time.
Thank you to the Security Staff
It has been noted that the Tourist Protection Unit Staff patrolling our streets are always very courteous and helpful often assisting residents and tourists with heavy bags or luggage to their vehicles. There appears to be a marked reduction of beggars harassing tourists which can surely be attributed to the presence of our visible Tourists Protection Staff patrolling our streets.
