Lynette is an artist with a background in architecture, and approaches the world with both creativity and careful analysis. Books have been her lifelong companions, fueling her love for knowledge, culture, and storytelling. She is deeply passionate about nurturing the arts and literature, especially among young people here in Namibia.

She cares profoundly for her community — people, animals, our environment — and Swakopmund holds a very special place in her heart.

Whether through her work, travels, or simple daily acts, she strives to protect and uplift the character of our town. She is a coffee enthusiast, a traveler, and a firm believer that even the smallest voice or creature deserves care and dignity.

It is this compassion, combined with dedication and vision, that she hopes to bring forward in service to our community.

1. Could you briefly introduce yourself and share what inspired you to enter local politics?

My name is Lynette van Niekerk. I am a qualified architectural draftsperson, artist, and cultural enthusiast. I love to get to know people and their cultures and traditions. I decided to enter local politics to assist in making a change to the “overall well-being” of Swakopmund, one step at a time, and to give back to the community, especially where the youth are concerned.

2. What unique qualities or experiences do you bring to the Swakopmund Town Council?

I have been actively involved in training the youth with art workshops and in the process, opening their minds to the potential of looking after the town and, more specifically, their environment. It’s not just about “what is the Municipality doing for me,” but what can I do as a matriculant to assist in the security and maintenance of my area that I live in. Like I always say to them, find out who is on the Junior Town Council, reach out, and get involved. The motto that I leave with them is: “See something, say something.”

3. What are the top priorities you would like to address if elected?

To create jobs through investments into factories, etc. and looking after the well-being of the community, mentally as well as physically.

4. How do you plan to engage with residents and remain accountable to the community?

Engaging with residents and remaining accountable to the community are fundamental to being an effective councillor. I plan to prioritize transparent communication, active listening, and consistent follow-through on the concerns and needs of the community by attending the regular Councillor Community Meetings to see where I can be of assistance.

I believe in being responsive to all communications from residents, whether through email, phone calls, or social media. I will ensure that all concerns are addressed.

5. In your view, what are the biggest challenges facing Swakopmund right now?

Not enough employment and not enough focus on the youth leaving school. For example, in my opinion, COSDEF was a dismal failure in this regard. I feel that the youth are the potential future of the town, and we need to address the issue that once they go and study, they do not come back. And if they do not come back, they do not want to open businesses here and guarantee a sustainable future for this town.

6. What message would you like to share directly with voters as election day approaches?

This isn’t just about politics—it’s about people. It’s about creating a community where everyone feels included, valued, and empowered. I am here to serve you, not just represent you. Together, we can make a difference, and I am ready to work alongside each of you to make that happen.

Thank you for considering me as your councillor. I look forward to building a stronger, more connected community with your input, your ideas, and your support.
